Cheat Menu

As you probably found out as soon as you finished the runway level for the first time, Goldeneye has a cheat menu with 23 possible cheats to be earned, some of which are fiendishly difficult. Some of the cheats make playing the game much more interesting and fun whilst others are relatively pointless. All the cheats are earned by finishing a level in a specific time on a certain difficulty level. This can be extremely hard but it is possible and we're going to show you how. In case you were wondering, no, you can't use one cheat to get another, and no, you cannot progress to any level you have not already accessed by fair (or foul) means. However, you can use the level specific Action Replay codes to earn cheats.

Guide to earning cheats

DAM

Easy. Shoot as you run, if necessary, and make like the wind for the first security gate. Go through, and the next, before killing the sneaky guard who tries to make it to the alarm. Destroy the alarm, then go through the gate, shoot the padlock on the next and run to the first guard tower. Go inside, and on your left is an alarm. Do it in, then run along to the next tower and do the same. Run to the final tower and alarm then backtrack to the jumping-off point and er, jump off.

FACILITY

Charge out of the toilets and swing round and down the stairs, through the door under the stairs, plug the bloke and take his card. About turn and go through the security door. Try and ignore the blokes and activate the console before charging out the room and down the corridor. Turn left through not one, two, but three security doors - watch out for the three blokes though. Carry on down the corridor shooting as you run, through the two security doors, turn left following the corridor to a security door which you should be shooting as you approach it - this will make the guard open it for you. Give him a warm greeting then go up the stairs. Follow the winding corridor taking out the guards on-the-fly. Now, it's time to see if you've got lucky: If you have Dr. Doak will come up to you in the area with all the scientists in the three glass-windowed rooms and give you the door decoder which you should then use down the corridor and around the corner (after dispatching the two guards if they're still there) on the security door (select it from the watch). Go through and go up to 006, while he's talking lay the mines on the tanks, wait for him to get away and then detonate. Run through the exit door.

RUNWAY

Turn left, run onto the conveyor belt and out of the building, left into the shed (pick up the grenades if you can be arsed), grab the key off the table, kill the two guards if you want (why not? you've got time!), exit the hut and go down the right-hand side of the runway until you reach the plane. Press B when up against the door and hey presto.

SURFACE a

Keep moving forwards until you reach the third hut on the right, go in and take out the officer and then nab his key, then retrace your steps moving in a direct line to the first hut on the left relative to your start position. Go in and get the safe key, before going out and following the left hand trees aroung to the fenced in area with two huts and lots of barrels. Enter the first hut and open the safe to retrieve the plans. Exit and make a beeline for the comms dish, go inside, up the stairs and through the far door. Press B on the computer. Exit the building and follow the trees on your left around to the ventilation shaft. Climb up and shoot off the padlocks, fall down.

BUNKER a

Go forward through the door, shoot the two blokes, shoot the first camera through the window of the door, go through door, shoot the two guys on patrol, get the security keycard off one of them. Turn left, left again, kill the two guards, get the computer room keycard off one of them, go to end of corridor and carefully but quickly destroy camera, about turn, open the first double-doors on your right and very quickly destroy the camera. Turn around and go into the room opposite, kill the three guards, leave the mainframe intact though. Exit and go left down corridor and steps into main control room, destroy camera through glass on far side, kill all guards. Take a picture of the big screen. Get Goldeneye key from Boris' table, select and use key analyser from watch, then throw away Goldeneye key (select and use). Go up to Boris and then follow closely to the computer room, wait for him to enter password. The little rat will then set off the alarm, so quickly use datathief on the mainframe and run like the wind to the end of the level.

SILO

The best tactic for this level is to run straight through the corridors, shooting only guards directly blocking your path. There are four main rooms, the last of which contains the satellite which needs to be photographed. In each of these rooms you need to kill the guards to stop them blowing stuff up and consequently killing scientists. In the first three of these rooms you will need to obtain a keycard from one of the scientists to progress, either hold them up so they drop it, kill them so they drop it (not recommended - only two scientists can die before it's mission over), or, if they run away they'll leave it on the floor somewhere, but you don't really have time for this here. Up until the satellite room, take the right-hand turn whenever faced with a choice. As you exit this room Ouromov will order his men to open fire, just keep running and shooting at Ouromov and then go left, through the door, go across through another, follow right through two rooms to the lift. Enter.

FRIGATE

Move up the ramp onto the frigate, go along and up the far stairs and through the door, kill the guard, go straight through the far door and down to the helicopter, plant tracker bug, go through large hanger door, go through two doors killing guards on way. Go down stairs, and through door into engine room. Go straight ahead and use bomb defuser on bomb, turn around and go down stairs into lower part of engine room, kill guards and free hostage, exit room through the opposite door up the walkway, making sure guards don't get in hostage's way. Go through door straight ahead, free another hostage, go around corridor, kill guard to free yet another hostage, turn around and go back past the engine room door around the corner and up the stairs, turn left, around corridor and up more stairs. Turn left and then left agin into room with computer consoles and hostage, free hostage then move into next room and do the same. Go left through door and left into corridor, left though doorway, right through door, left through door, right through another, through radio room and into main bridge. Kill guards free last hostage, and defuse bomb. Go through middle door out of three on right, down steps, about turn, forward and right down to boat and finish.

SURFACE b

Keep going until you get to the third hut on the right, take out camera, enter and kill guard to get comms room key. Exit and run in a straight line to the fenced off area with two huts and lots of barrels. On the side of the near hut is another camera, destroy and then carry on around to the two huts and take out the camera on the right hut. Backtrack to the dish, enter, go up on to the walkway, take out the camera en route to the comms room, destroy everything on table and then go out of the dish building and go straight ahead to the helicopter. Carefully place the mine on the helicopter and enter the bunker.

BUNKER b

Escape from cell, slap guard to death, get key to Natalya's cell, free her. Go out of the cell room and left along a corrider and up some steps, go right and you'll be facing a locked door. The keycard can be obtained from one of the patrolling guards nearby, but if you've kicked up a noise then a guard may open it for you from the other side. Anyway, once through, go right and through the first door on your right into a room with a blue generator. Go through the two doors into the room with the CCTV tape. Go out through the double-doors, left along the corridor and right down the steps, through the glass doors opposite, along, up the steps, through the door to exit. Don't worry about losing Natalya - after you free her she'll automatically appear with you when you exit.

STATUE

To get anywhere near 3:15 on this level you really have to know it inside out and be able to run in a perfectly direct line at max speed between your objectives. At the beginning go forward and follow the fence on the left-hand side until you're through the red archway. Continue moving forward keeping the left-hand fence nearby, go past the white trailer, left past the pillars, and around and into the red trailer. Talk to Valentin, when he's finished, go straight ahead and then follow the right-hand fence until you reach the gap. Go through and again hug the right hand fence to reach the statue where you must confront and unmask Janus. Make sure you are unarmed or else Janus won't like it. No need to listen to all his waffle, as soon as the objective is complete, run like the wind back to the start where you'll find a helicopter and Natalya unconscious. Wake her and move away; go down to the first section of junk ready for the flight recorder to land. It's position is random, but there are only a couple of areas where it can be. Once it is retrieved, run like there's no tomorrow to the gates near the start position and go through.

ARCHIVES

The Archives' invisibility cheat is definitely the hardest to earn, but is also one of the best. Follow these instructions implicitly and you might just make it with a second to spare. As soon as the level starts, run round the table and slap the guard on the right - get off him the door key and a DD44 Dostovei. Run out of the room and turn right, go along and up the stairs, go left down the corridor and go through the door at the end. Turn left and run across to and through the double-doors into the large room with lots of bookcases, then turbo across to the only single door in the room. Open it so Natalya sees you, then turn around and make like greased lightning through the doors on the opposite side of the room, in the corner. Go down the stairs and quickly take the nearest door on your right, hug the left hand wall and take the door directly in front. Go through the door immediately on your left and you'll see Mishkin. Go up to him to start the conversation, then go around the boxes and position yourself on the corner of the safe next to the handle, as soon as Mishkin gives you the key, open the safe and take the flight recorder. Exit through the other door and follow the sunlit corridor into a room with the three exit windows. Shoot the nearest one as you run towards it, and exit.

STREETS

Run left to the tank ignoring the guards, drive it out and at the end of the street turn right. Go under the tunnel - thing and follow the road taking every left turn available to make it to the end in the quickest time. Just don't run over too many civilians. You can either try and shoot the cars and mines, or simply drive through them - the tank has enough armour to withstand it. You need to make it to the exit before the timer reaches 3:19.

DEPOT

Run forward and right, keep moving past the first bloke on your left, then go left through the wire gate. Keep going straight forward through the gap in the wall and turn left. Go forward into the BX011 building and take out the guards to your immediate left and right. Grab their D5Ks and use them to kill the blokes from behind the silver crates where the drone gun can't see you, before quickly destroying the drone gun itself. Blow up the two mainframes and large video screen before grabbing the safe key off the far left table. Exit, turn left and run forward until you can turn left again. Do so. Run past the boarded up building, down a ramp and up some steps into a trackside building, go upstairs and crouch to open the safe on the left to get the blueprints. Exit through the upstairs door and go down through the middle hanger door and enter the train. Don't bother to kill the guards - Bond will in the cut-scene.

TRAIN

The best way here is to keep moving, strafing left and right to avoid boxes, only stopping to kill guards blocking your path. Take out the brake boxes swiftly, and as soon as you get ZMGs you should equip them to speed things up. After taking out the last brake box, two blokes will come round the corner just begging to be blown away. One of them will give you the key to the room where you'll find Janus, Xenia, and Ouromov holding Natalya hostage. Carefully edge into the room and strafe to the right. You need to be able to drop Ouromov quickly and then shoot Xenia before the shutter goes down - if you fail to hit her you won't have enough time to complete the mission. If you do this successfully then you should immediately get to work on the floor with the watch laser, you might be interrupted by a guard or two, just kill them with the watch laser and carry on with the floor. DO NOT leave the train until Natalya has cracked Boris' password, then leg it down the hole in the floor, shoot the three guards to the left and then turn around and run to the end of the level.

JUNGLE

Move forward, take out a bloke to get an AR33, then continue forward taking out blokes quickly. There are three drone guns before the bridge, these should be destroyed by zooming in with the sight and shooting the barrel. Xenia isn't too hard - as soon as you get to the middle of the bridge, either retreat and zoom in waiting for her to cross the bridge (shoot her in the head), or wait for her at the end of the bridge, but watch out for the drone gun to the left after the bridge. Carry on for a bit and enter the cave, take out the drone gun, then continue along to the ladder. Climb almost to the top and you should be able to zoom in and shoot the drone gun without it seeing you, take out the last drone gun just behind it. Run through, shooting all the while and enter the lift at the end of the corridor.

CONTROL

The first drone gun can be shot from in the lift, the other two can be taken out from where they can't even see you. Kill all the blokes and then go back to Natalya in the lift. Follow her and she'll open a door for you, go through. Run down the corridor, shooting the two blokes, and then go into the room where they were and get the mines. Wait a moment as someone in the ajoining room has probably lobbed a grenade, and then go in guns blazing and take them all out. Go through the room with the generator, up the steps and through the door, kill the four guards. Go through into the main room of the level. Ignore Boris sure, but don't kill him as Natalya won't like it. Go upstairs and kill the two guards before laying a mine on each of the four mainframes. Blow them and then open the door opposite the one you came in and take out the two drone guns and blokes quickly, watch out for another drone gun hiding to the left as you enter. Go in and destroy the mainframe then go back to the main room and through the far door on the second floor where you'll meet Natalya. Go in to the main section with all the computers and take up position to protect Natalya. Once she's disabled the Goldeneye satellite the two previously locked doors in this room will be unlocked. Go through the right-hand one. Destroy the last mainframe, go through the door and into the lift on the left side of the room.

CAVERNS

Keep going along, killing all the guards until you see the steps going down to the left. Go down and destroy the two consoles, trying to make sure the scientists don't get caught in the blast. Go through the passage into the next room and destroy the other two consoles, again be careful with the scientists. Go up the steps onto the walkway and go through the door and around the pool until you reach the top, killing a couple of blokes on the way. Run through the next bloke infested room along the walkway and down the steps to the lower level. Turn around and go along to the room and destroy the filing cabinets, go through the secret passage. Destroy the three consoles in the next room, a guard should also give you a code card in this section. Go up the steps and destroy the drone gun, take out any blokes. Go through the double-door onto the walkway and follow it straight ahead round to the next double-door; you should get another code card off one of the blokes on the way. Go through into the room and run straight to the radio and press B to use, then run away as one of the blokes will blow the whole place up (if they don't, then shoot the barrels yourself to destroy the master computer). Get another keycard from someone in the room. Go through the large door, down the corridor and left through another large door, then through a double-door where you should take out the two drone guns with all due haste. Carry on to the lift.

CRADLE

Run along the walkways shooting as you go. Go down to the section with the two sheds and quickly destroy the two drone guns, followed by the console behind the machinery; shoot Janus if you can, then go to the top of the walkway and shoot him again. Follow him around and keep shooting him between his comments until he says "Finish the job". Follow him down to the lowest shed, then fall down the hole backwards. Shoot Janus for the last time.

AZTEC

Take out the two blokes to your left and the one to the right then go through the hidden door on the far wall. Kill all the guards in this room (you can shoot them through the metal boxes with the AR33), then go through another hidden door on the far wall into a high-tech room with plenty of guards. Do them some GBH then shoot the conspicuous-looking mainframe on the far left, a guard should open it and you can go through, following the passage around to the room below the shuttle, shoot the left console before you enter the room. Rush into the room and go through the now open grille before the shuttle kills you. Go forward and quickly destroy the two drone guns. Follow the passage around to the left until you come to the grille. Shoot the first drone gun through it and then destroy the one just to the right of the grille. Take cover behind the nearby metal boxes and then take out the two far drone guns and any blokes in the room. Go through the opposite grille, down the steps, into another room and down more steps, into Jaws' room. Kill him and get the security smart card. Retrace your steps back to the high-tech room (pressing B on the computer to move the mainframe), stopping in the shuttle room to go up the ladder and close the exhaust bay doors. Go into the section separated by glass (press B on the glass), get the DAT off the table, use the guidance data on the disk drives on the left-hand table. Go all the way back to the shuttle room, use the launch protocol data on the right-hand mainframe. Go up the ladder and open the exhaust bay doors. Wait for the shuttle to lift off!

EGYPTIAN

Run forward hugging the right wall then go through into the next chamber. Hug the right wall then go along the passage and up the stairs, go left into the golden gun chamber. The floor is made of tiles. Step on the first tile in the room then follow this pattern of movement: left two, forward two, right three, forward two, left one, forward one, left one, forward two, and right two. Pick up the golden gun and the bullets then exit the through the left wall. Fall down and go to the end of this room to meet the baron, shoot him until he dies for the first time, then backtrack to the start room with the mirror on the floor where you'll meet him again. Kill him for a second time and the lights dim. No go back to the stairs leading to the golden gun chamber, turn right. Go forward, down some stairs, through another room with a mirrored floor, and up two sets of stairs. Keep going until you come to the baron: kill him for the last time.

So there you have it. After all that you should have 23 cheats in your cheat menu. Tantalisingly, one space is left on the menu, probably to keep you guessing. However, Line Mode will fill up that space nicely - it is not available in-game; you need an Action Replay.

If you have any particular problems getting a cheat or feel you've got a decent time on some level or another e-mail me and we'll stick it in our Hall of Fame.

About the Cheats...

What follows is a small commentary on the cheats and some of the possibilities which arise from their usage. We haven't included the individual weapon cheats as they are made obsolete by the All Guns cheat.

Invincible: the most obviously useful cheat in the game. Curiously, it also works in multiplayer mode. Eliminates the annoying throwback you get from being hit.

All guns: gives you access to one or two of every weapon in the game including some you won't have come across, providing endless possibilities. Single player only.

Bond Invisible: the ultimate in stealth, fun when experimenting with knives and mines. Makes progression in some levels impossible: people do not see you and therefore don't talk to you.

Infinite Ammo: useful in multiplayer.

DK Mode: swells the heads of every character in the game (including Bond), providing a bigger target for head shots. Works in multiplayer.

Tiny Bond: allows bond to crouch low enough to look under the toilet doors in facility.

Paintball Mode: makes a nice change from the standard bullet holes, by using it you'll realise just how often you hit blokes in the gun (i.e. they take no damage). Will make either single or multiplayer levels much more colourful.

No Radar (Multi): makes deathmatches more suspenseful.

Turbo Mode: useful in the outdoor levels, and works in multiplayer.

Fast Animation: speeds up all the enemies and cut-scenes.

Slow Animation: like above, but in reverse.

Enemy Rockets: provides the enemies with rocket launchers, which they aren't 100% competant with.
